Research Specialty

1.   Crystal Structure of Glycoside hydrolase (GH 6, 16, and 48 Enzymes)

Enzyme–carbohydrate interactions and selective hydrolysis of glycosidic bonds are crucial for cellular processes, energy uptake, and degradation. Glycosyl hydrolases have the ability to recognize and bind particular carbohydrates and then cleave the specific glycosidic bond between either two or more carbohydrates or between a carbohydrate and a non-carbohydrate moiety. We have determined three family enzymatic structures with their substrate(product), a mix b/a GH6, a jellyroll b- of GH 6, and a (a/a) GH48.

2.  Biomolecule detection

Nanowire field-effect-transistor (NWFET) based sensors are shown to possess the advantage as a label-free, highly sensitive and real-time means of detection, making it an excellent candidate for the detection of the biologically active molecular interactions. Using Si-NWFETs made by state-of-the-art microfabrication technology, we have demonstrated the capacity of the NWFET based sensors to monitor the DNA hybridizations with a record-high sensitivity (0.1fM). Furthermore, we demonstrated the following applications of this device in the detections of E coli, H1N1 virus, and gaseous substances such as ethanol and methanol.
